Born in 1973 in Istanbul, the artist and designer Tolga Berkay graduated from Marmara University G.S.F. Ceramics department in 1996 with the second degree. During his faculty years, he strengthened his artistic personality by taking ceramics and sculpture courses from world-renowned and valuable faculty members such as Prof. Güngör Güner, Prof. Erdinç Bakla, Prof. Jale Yılmabaşar, Prof. Tankut Öktem, Prof. Ateş Arcasoy. He always aimed to become better in his art and design life and crowned this endeavor by receiving international awards.
In 1992, in his freshman year, he was awarded among Turkish and Dutch ceramic artists for his first ceramic plate technique work, and his work with the Tulip Vase ceramic design was deemed worthy of being exhibited in Topkapı Palace.
Between 1994-1995, he studied sculpture in the workshop of the famous sculptor Prof. Tankut Öktem and worked on human anatomy.
He opened his first solo exhibition on ceramic sculptures and his interpretations of the Hittite period, one of the Anatolian civilizations, at the Galata Tower in 1994 with the presence of the then Minister of Culture, Mr. Ercan Karakaş and the then Cultural Attaché, Mr. Emre Kongar. The artist is known for his interpretations of Anatolian civilizations and ceramic Trojan horses.
The artist, who received 8 International and 3 Domestic awards between 1992 and 2022, was selected as the "Design Hero" in Italy in 2016 by A Design Award in Italy. He has also been awarded the best bathroom design of the year twice in 2012 and 2015 by the international Elle Decoration magazine.
The artist, who participated in various biennials, symposiums, fairs and group exhibitions in Turkey and abroad, has two solo exhibitions. He has also served as a jury member in the ceramic and design competitions of various organizations. His articles and interviews have been published in various art and architecture magazines.
